Group Tour of the South Mountain & Antietam Battlefields

May 20-21, 2006 at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg , MD

Members of the 78th PVI, Co. F, traveled to Maryland for a group tour of the South Mountain and Antietam Battlefields.  On May 20, Matthew and Aaron Hooks conducted the tour of the Antietam Battlefield.  The tour lasted most of the day and covered all major areas of the battle.  On May 21, friend and fellow re-enactor Jerry Hornbaker gave us a guided tour of the Battle of South Mountain that covered the actions at all of the gaps.  We finished the tour with stops at the Kennedy House and the Washington Monument .

Matthew begins the tour at the North Woods.  The Miller farm is in the background.

Vickie and Jan stand at the Clara Barton monument near the North Woods.

Our group poses with park employee Dwight Mumma who is a descendant of the Mumma family whose farm was burned during the battle.

78th military members stand in front of the 15th Massachusetts monument in the West Woods.  The 15th lost more men than any other regiment during the Battle of Antietam.

Members pose in the doorway of the famous Dunkard Church .

78th members pose at the stone wall that the 51st Pennsylvania used during the fight at Burnside’s Bridge.

The group listens to Jerry’s tour of the Fox’s Gap battle area on Sunday.

The group gets a photo taken at the Kennedy House where John Brown stayed just before his raid on the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry.

78th members pose for a photo at the base of the Washington Monument at the conclusion of Sunday’s tour.  From left to right are: Mike Valasek, Vickie Hooks, Matthew Hooks, Eddie Fantuzzo, Jerry Hornbaker, Mike Huston, Aaron Hooks, and Randy Hooks.

The view as seen from atop the Washington Monument looking north to Pennsylvania .  The monument was built by Revolutionary War veterans and was the first dedicated to George Washington .
